The fortress

Walls so high to protect me

Even from myself

Deep in the basement

In cobwebs behind a door

Is the hiding place

Of secrets that are

Shrouded behind a dark veil

I dare not expose

Even to myself

Shielding me from destruction

If it is revealed

The fragile essence

Of guarded imperfections

You will never see

They are pounding now

On the doors to be released

To help set me free

I am not alone

I see it so clearly now

Your lock and your key

Let us take the steps

Find that hidden place of fear

Torment and sorrow

The war is over

Time has come to surrender

And break down the walls

Freed from the fortress

  1. Yes, break down the walls, peel away the onion-like layers, although it certainly ain’t easy.

If I may, I think your break away from WP has done you good. You’ve come back rejuvenated, reinvigorated and your recent craft is a testimony to that. Bravo!

    1. Thank you so much for this inspiration Kunal. Writing this poem has been quite cathartic for me and I hope it will be for others who can relate. As you said, it’s not easy, hence they’ve been cobwebbed. My sunshine is back again!πŸ˜€πŸŒΉ

  2. It is amazing how many things that we use walls to protect us from. As you mentioned, our own perceived imperfections or secrets that our minds have hidden so well that we are no longer aware of their existence.
We are so complex in that way.
That said, I’ll take you up on your offer. Let’s set ourselves free πŸ™‚

    1. I think I was a bit lighthearted when I started writing this poem. I’m following a television series called “Flesh and bone” and there is a point where the ballerinas are asked to go in and pull out their deep dark secrets that hold them back from true free expression in their art. So the poem was inspired by this excerpt. But after writing it, I realised I needed to do this and it has been quite a revelation.
I think I mentioned on your blog that we have drawers of memories in our brains that we are not even aware of until something triggers it.
For the sake of fulfilment, happiness and purpose, we need to free ourselves SISTA! πŸ˜€
