In search of meaning

Sometimes I am ravenous

in my search for the right word

to satisfy my hunger

fulfill my craving

Some words wet my appetite

others promise a tasty treat

to savor and linger longer

between each serving

But sometimes the words-

are served in a bowl of trifle

layered, elaborate concoctions

that addle my brain

In the end I will settle

for the words that are familiar

clear and concise, flavored

with just a pinch of the exotic

Still I remain ambitious

to become a connoisseur

of the finest delectable cuisine

but for now, I’d like them digestable

Those epicurean morsels of words…

When my mind wonders

This is a poem within a  poem. Read carefully to find two very different poems which combine to form a third.

When I am in doubt

You give me a reason

To linger a while longer

To feel alive again

My mind starts to wonder

When you call my name

I wonder how life would be

My heart skips several beats

To start again,totally free

Locked in complete ecstasy

Discovering the other side of me

I feel a fire that flames

Then I awake to the reality

Still consumed in your warm glow

The darkness slowly descends

How I long for you not to go

Then the Dawn comes too soon

How I wished to dream longer!

You and I

I’ve hidden special trinkets for you

Along the journey we’ve travelled

Just you and I

I’ve retraced my footsteps

Always finding  you behind

When it was just- you and I

We walked upon mountain peaks

Basked in the glow of an ocean sun

Together- just you and I

In a world brimming with people,

Our music was the melody of nature’s sounds

A symphony playing – just for you and I

I’ve seen you come and go in confusion

As we balance our lives with illusion

Of a world – with just you and I

There’ve been times when you’ve been silent

I’ve known and understood the reason why

It was always about – just you and I

I follow the footpath again and I recall

The invitation for a dinner for two

Special requirements- for you and I

I’m hoping you’ll find all the trinkets

I’ve hidden especially for you

Down pathways-just for us two

It was always you

You came lookingI watched you

Searching in my draws trying to find my truth

Attempting to find my soul which I had hidden

Tucked among my words specially reserved

You wanted to know my secret love affair

Why I smiled –clearly,it wasn’t for you

What made me laugh if not you, then who?

How could you win my heart who was he?

I had left signs and traces that confused you

For you to find, sending you into a spiral

My heart made of my butterfly wings

You failed to discover, you could not see

It had already been taken, it was always you

This is  a Cleave poem. In simple terms, a Cleave poem can be read as three separate poems. The first poem is the regular typeface to be read vertically –the second poem is the part in italics and the third is the  whole poem read horizontally. Catching the sunlight

He tried to figure her out

but he was never good at Math

to get her full measure – neither an athlete…

Each time he thinks he’s caught her,

she’s lost him around the bend.

Still, his curiosity won’t let go.

If only she would slow down a little–

She’s a little too drunk on speed

and he’s still smoking weed–

It shows up in the words…

Words that illuminate and

eliminate clues to understanding.

How they’ll find each other

In this complex maze of mis–

understanding?

So he stands peering–

through her window, it’s late,

too late to see into her room.

She watches him standing there,

wondering why he doesn’t come in.

Then one day she hears the door–

slowly opening – At last! she sighs–

finally, his light comes streaming in.

She’s no longer in orbit, he begins,

undressing her mystery to his delight!

Caught up in your rapture

I love the way you feel

You look at me like a dream

A certain softness hypnotizing me

In your eyes, casting a spell

I can’t help myself night and day

When we touch you are the one

I lose control when you claim me completely

In your arms, we become one

I’m caught up in your rapture when I’m with you

This is my second experiment with a Cleave poem. In simple terms, a Cleave poem can be read as three separate poems. The sinking sun

With heavy heart

and weighted dread

I saw the sinking sun

isolated in a white sky

Then flare blindingly

bearing down

as an uninvited guest

to morning’s awakening

Knots of fear

knitted into the pit

of a tangled mess

bottled up and kept

I stood on the edges

of the neighborhood

looking into a hazy view

confused in what next to do

Praying to God above

for a brighter sun

to turn the cheerless skies to blue.

Moving to the slow lane

Oh the feel of those fast cars!

so long and shining-sleek,

those soft and smooth…

tight leather seats- laps

behind the power-steering.

Let’s not talk about the torque-

just watch me as I take off…

silver rims rolling in reverse-

perverse to ride with such speed,

not to mention the ultra-sound.

Racing like it was a marathon,

I’ve got to break the habit…

set up my cruise control,

got to act more responsible.

Fleeting pleasure-

not the measure of who I am.

Too many speeding tickets,

it’s no longer fun.

So I’m taking it nice and slow

Which one – wouldn’t you like to know?

I’ll stay with the automatic.

Settling down in the slow lane
